BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---Oscar
Sanay (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif.,
Bonita Vista HS) went 4-for-4 as Tommy Hoenshell (Jr., Orange
County, Calif., Cypress College)
tossed a complete game five-hitter as CSU Bakersfield (29-21) defeated No. 19
Fresno State (37-13) 5-2 Saturday night at Hardt Field.
Dusty Robinson hit his 14th home run of the year in the top
of the first to break the seal for the Bulldogs. Fresno State
scored in the second on a Scott David fielder's choice that plated Garrett
Weber.
CSUB opened the bottom of the third with three consecutive
hits, capped off by a DC Legg (Jr., Murrietta, Calif., Cypress
College) RBI single.
Tyler Shryock (Fr., Tehachapi,
Calif., Desert Christian HS) tied
the game later in the inning with a sacrifice fly.
doubled to open the bottom of the fourth and moved to third
on a wild pitch from Bulldogs' starter Tyler Linehan. Sanay was thrown out home
by Fresno State third baseman Danny Muro when Sanay attempted to score on a
Cael Brockmeyer (Fr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS),
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fourth with cleanup
hitter Jordan Ribera coming to bat. Ribera hit a grounder towards Brockmeyer,
the CSUB first baseman. The 6-5 righty dove to his backhand, fielded the ball
and threw to Roadrunner pitcher for the final out of the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan McIntyre (Jr.,
Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS) singled to right. He
advanced to second on Linehan's second wild pitch of the night. McIntyre stole
third. Sanay worked a 2-2 count off of Linehan and singled to right to drive
home McIntyre.
With one out in the seventh, Shryock singled to right, but
Robinson, the Bulldogs' right fielder threw out Legg at third. Sanay's fourth
hit of the night in the bottom of the eighth, a single up the middle scored
Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks,
Calif., Crespi HS) for a 4-2 CSUB
lead.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out and Legg at
the plate. Legg's sac fly to left scored McIntyre for a three-run 'Runner
advantage. With bases loaded for a second time in the frame, Shryock struck out
to end the inning.
McIntyre scored two runs and made a spectacular jumping catch
in the top of the ninth to take a way an extra base hit away from Kenny Wise. The game was played in front of the second largest crowd in school history, 1021. The largest was the 2010 season opener against Air Force (1049).
The CSUB victory clinches the series for the Roadrunners. It
also marks the first time that Fresno
State has dropped a
series this season.
