BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.- UC Riverside (17-14)
pitchers Eddie Orozco, Dylan Stuart, and
Mitch Patito limited CSUB to six hits (24-8) as the Highlanders defeated the
Roadrunners 3-0 Thursday night at Hardt Field.
The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on
a Justin Shults RBI ground out to short. UC Riverside threatened in the sixth
but with two outs, Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield,
Calif., Liberty HS) threw out
Eddie Young at home.
The top of the seventh saw UC Riverside put runners on the
corners with one out. Vince Gonzalez's safety squeeze plated Schults. Kyle
Boudreau came up next and singled, but Letourneau threw out David Andriese for
out No. 2. Bart Stepanovich singled which scored Gonzalez for a 3-0
Highlanders' advantage. Young lined out to center to end the inning.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases in the seventh and in the
eight, but both times Stuart got out of the jam for UC Riverside.
Orozco allowed three hits and struck out eight in 6.2
innings of work. Stuart pitched 1.1 innings for the hold while Patito went for
his sixth save. The UC Riverside trio struck out 11 CSUB hitters. Eight
different UC Riverside hitters had a hit. The Roadrunners left 10 runners on
base.
Oscar Sanay (Fr., Chula
Vista, Calif., Bonita
Vista HS) had two of the 'Runner hits. Tommy Hoenshell (Jr., Orange
County, Calif., Cypress College)
made his first start in 18 days and
retired the first nine Highlanders he faced. The 6-6 righty struck out nine including
four in a row at one point, but was on the losing end of the stick when he left
after seven innings.
The teams continue the series at Friday night at 6 p.m.
