BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-CSUB (13-5) came from behind to defeat Lafayette (4-8) 12-6 in
college baseball action Mar. 16 at Hardt Field.
The Leopards jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the
third, powered by a two-RBI single from Scott Kelleher. The Roadrunners got two back in the bottom of
the inning. Lafayette
scored two more in the fourth, but CSUB scored in the bottom of the frame.
A Mick Gaston (Jr., Quartz
Hill, Calif., Quartz
Hill HS) two-run home run got the Roadrunners to 5-4. An Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield,
Calif., Bakersfield
College) sacrifice fly scored Kevin
Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) to tie the game.
CSUB went ahead 7-5 in the sixth. Lafayette
reliever Ben Meer walked the first four Roadrunners of the inning with Tyler
Shryock (Fr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) getting credit
for the RBI that gave CSUB the lead, 6-5. Oscar Sanay's (Fr., Chula Vista, Calif.,
Bonita Vista HS) sacrifice fly plated Younger for a two-run Roadrunner
advantage.
AJ Miller led off the seventh with a home run for Lafayette. The Leopards
threatened in the eighth. With two outs and runners on first and third, Martin
Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventura HS), the CSUB closer
got Matt Fenster to ground out to third to end the inning.
Letourneau earned an RBI when he walked with the bases loaded
in the bottom of the eighth. Sanay, the next CSUB batter, drove in two runs
with a single for a 10-6 Roadrunner advantage. Jeremy Rodriguez drove in the
11th CSUB run with a sacrifice fly. Medina's
RBI single gave CSUB a 12-6 lead.
Medina went 2-for-5 at the
plate and earned save (coming in the game with one out in the seventh and CSUB
up 7-6) in relief of Spenser Messmore (Jr., Granada Hills, Calif.,
Alemeny HS). Messmore relieved CSUB starter Brandon Van Dam (Jr., Lancaster, Calif.,
Quartz Hill HS).
Messmore went 3.1 innings after coming in for Van Dam in the
fourth. Messmore gave up just one run during his stint. Sanay had a total of
three RBI's. The Leopards out hit the Roadrunners 14-10. Shryock went 2-for-3
with two runs scored.
CSUB and Lafayette continue their series Thursday with a 2
p.m. game.
