COLUMBIA, S.C-No. 30 CSUB (12-5) defeated No. 4 South
Carolina (11-2) 8-3 Mar. 13 at Carolina Stadium.
For the third consecutive day, the Roadrunners got on the
board first when Andrew Letourneau (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield
College) drove in Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) with a
single in the top of the second.
Adam Matthews' single plated Christian Walker to tie the
score in the bottom of the inning. DC
Legg (Jr., Marietta, Calif., Cypress College) returned the lead to the
Roadrunners in the top of the third when his sacrifice fly scored Jeremy
Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS). A Gamecocks' passed ball
allowed Martin Medina (Jr., Ventura, Calif., St. Bonaventure HS) to score and
give a two-run advantage.
Tyler Shryock's (Fr., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian
HS) two-RBI single made it 5-1. CSUB scored two more in the sixth as Medina
posted an RBI double while Ryan McIntyre (Jr., Henderson, Nev., Coronado HS)
had an RBI single.
Tommy Hoenshell (Jr., Orange County, Calif., Cypress
College) limited the Gamecocks to five hits through the first seven innings,
but South Carolina threatened in the eighth.
Jake Williams opened the eighth with a triple to left center. Jackie
Bradley, Jr.'s sacrifice fly scored Williams. Walker came up next and doubled.
Adrian Morales singled in Walker to make it 7-3. Hoenshell
silenced the rally when he got Brady Thomas to line out to Cael Brockmeyer
(Fr., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS), the Roadrunners' first
baseman, who then stepped on first to double up Morales for the double play and
end the inning.
A Younger two-out single in the top of the ninth drove in
McIntyre to get the lead back to five and the final 8-3.
Letourneau, Medina, and McIntyre each posted two hits. Five
of the eight CSUB runs came with two outs.
The Roadrunners ended South Carolina's 14-game home winning streak that
dated back to the 2010 season.
CSUB returns to Hardt Field after a two-week sabbatical
when the Roadrunners host Lafayette College (Pa.) for a four-game series
beginning Wednesday at 2 p.m.
