Washington State Defeats CSUB 4-2 In Baseball Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Washington State defeated CSUB 4-2 in the 2011 baseball season opener for both schools Feb. 18 at Hardt Field.

With CSUB leading 2-1, Washington State went ahead in the top of the seventh. Jason Monda tripled in Matt Argyropoulous to tie the game and scored later in the inning on a Tommy Richards ground out.

The Cougars led 1-0 in the sixth inning when freshman Oscar Sanay (Chula Vista, Calif. (Bonita Vista HS) smacked a two run double to score Kevin Younger (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Jeremy Rodriguez (Jr., Thousand Oaks, Calif., Crespi HS).

The Cougars added an insurance run in the top of ninth on a CSUB passed ball.

Washington State's Adam Conley pitched out of a first inning jam. The first two CSUB batters reached base on Cougars' errors, but Conley responded by striking out the side. He allowed just four hits and struck out nine in eight innings before giving way to Richie Ochoa who tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

CSUB starter Tommy Hoenshell (Jr., Orange County, Calif., Cypress College) also went eight innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter, taking the loss.

"We went up against a very tough pitcher who will likely be a Friday night starter in the Pac-10," said CSUB Head Coach Bill Kernen. "I was disappointed that we couldn't take advantage of the opportunity we had in the first inning (runners on first and second with no out) and couldn't capitalize. Tommy (Hoenshell) threw really well and I was pleased with his outing."

Game two of the CSUB-Washington State series is Saturday at Hardt Field beginning at 1 p.m.
