BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Despite a UC Davis offside trap that seemed to always find perfect timing against the Roadrunner breakaway, CSU Bakersfield finally broke through with a pair of second-half goals for a 3-1 win over UC Davis at the Main Soccer Field. The win improved CSUB to 2-0-0 for the first time since the move to the NCAA Division I level and the first time since 2006 overall.
Despite an early own goal in the 12th minute that put CSUB up 1-0, UC Davis frustrated the Roadrunner attack with a successful offside trap that left CSUB with 12 offside calls for the match. Breaking away somewhat from a typical Simon Tobin coached style, CSUB looked time and again to break that offside trap with long balls over the top and through the Aggie defense.
The trap worked for nearly 63 minutes, but that is when Ernesto Hinojosa broke the trap with a pass up the center of the field with Jesus Sanchez timing his run perfectly though the UC Davis defense. Alone with Aggie goalkeeper Tommy Siragusa, Sanchez calmly touched the ball past the lunging goalkeeper, and easily put the ball into the open goal for 2-0 lead.
It might not have been the style of soccer that Roadrunner fans are used to seeing from Tobin's teams, but it finally worked in the end.
“In the first half with Evan (Fassler) up top, looking for the long ball is always an option because he's so quick,” Tobin said. “But we weren't looking very good in the first half. We made some changes in the second half and we were better. But I think that the nature of the game dictated how we played. We're very comfortable playing several different ways.”
That second goal iced the match for a Roadrunner team that is now 2-0-0 with two quality wins to open the season, including Wednesday's 1-0 overtime thriller over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara. Tobin suggested that fact, combined with the fact that Friday was UC Davis' season opener, might have had something to do with the performance on Friday night as well.
“Remember, we just played a two overtime game against the team that I think is the best in the country,” Tobin said. “I think I'll be proven right about that by the end of the season. But UC Davis was fresh.”
CSUB added a third in the 85th minute when Wayne Lampart sent a perfect cross from the right wing to the far post to find Keeyan Ghazanfarpour alone for a simple header into the corner to increase the lead to 3-0. UC Davis scored one minute later on a beautiful right-footed blast inside the upper left corner, but it wasn't enough for the Aggies.
The Roadrunners will look to continue their strong opening to the season on Sept. 11 in a 2 p.m. match at the University of San Francisco. UC Davis' next match is Sunday at home against San Jose State.
