Shirk's Late Match-Winner Lifts Roadrunners Over Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - A superb individual effort by Tyler Shirk (Monrovia HS) and seven stops from goalkeeper Kym Gause (Manteca/Modesto JC) helped the CSUB women's soccer team knock Saint Mary's from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 1-0 victory Sunday at Saint Mary's Stadium.

CSUB (2-3-2 overall) which earned a 1-1 draw at UC Davis Friday night, finished its two-game Northern California swing unbeaten. Saint Mary's (6-1-0) lost for the first time in seven matches this season.

"I am so proud of our girls. To go to double overtime on Friday and then come out once again and give a full effort, they deserved to get these results this weekend," says CSUB Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. "We turned the corner, and that was our main goal."

Gause made six first half saves, as did her counterpart, Sarah Peters, to keep the match scoreless at the interval. CSUB seemed destined for a second consecutive overtime game when Shirk ran on to a deep free kick. Peters did well to deny Shirk's first attempt, but the 'Runner freshman toe poked home her own rebound in the 85th minute for what proved to be the match-winner.

"The goal truly was an individual effort by Tyler that was propelled by hard work from the entire team," according to Van Dyke. "Saint Mary's had a fair share of chances and played a good game. They are a quality team off to great start. I'm sure they will continue to go on and get results."

Saint Mary's ended up out-shooting the 'Runners 15-11 for the match, although the 'Runners put more shots on frame, 9-7.

On the other end of the field, Gause continued her strong recent run of play. She tossed her first shutout of the season, lowering her goals against average to 1.37 in the process. It's an impressive 0.90 over her last three starts.

CSUB, 1-1-1 on its current six-match road swing, travels to San Diego to meet No. 17 the University of San Diego Friday in San Diego. The 'Runners stunned the then 13th-ranked Toreros 2-1 in Bakersfield last season.
