SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly exploded for a dozen runs on 16 hits to claim a 12-3 win over the CSUB baseball team in the first of a three-game series Friday night at Baggett Stadium.

The Roadrunners fell to 25-29 on the season while the Mustangs improved to 22-31 overall, claiming their 12th win in the last 16 games.

Cal Poly starter Matt Leonard (2-7) kept the CSUB bats at bay for eight complete innings, striking out three and scattering seven hits for three earned runs.

Leonard got plenty of support from his team's offense, which tallied two runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Adam Melker went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead Cal Poly. Also collecting multiple hits were Luke Yoder (3), Bobby Crocker (2), Jordan Hadlock (2) and Evan Busby (2).   

The Roadrunners got on the board in the fifth with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. Kevin Younger led off the inning with a single up the middle, advanced to third on a Kyle Richardson single up the middle and scored in a sacrifice fly to right by JJ Henry.

Joey Mills led off the eighth with a double to left center and, three batters later, Martin Medina doubled down the left field line, sending Mills home. Jason Kudlock then traded places with Medina, knocking his own double down the left field line, giving the Roadrunners their third run of the game.

In 3.1 innings, Jannis (4-5) was struck for eight earned runs on 11 hits. Brandon Van Dam struck out four while giving up four hits and two walks for four earned runs in 3.2 innings of relief. Nick Shannon made his second appearance of the season on the mound in the eighth, keeping the Mustangs off the board for the third consecutive inning.

Gaston had a pair of hits for CSUB, which totaled just eight team hits. Medina, Kudlock and Mills all tallied RBIs hits, while Richardson, Younger and Eric Sanchez had one hit apiece.

The Roadrunners and Mustangs continue play Saturday at 1 p.m. The season-ending series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. at Baggett Stadium.
