NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — The CSUB baseball team scored one run in each of the first four innings, added one more in the sixth and got a complete-game pitching performance from Matt Reyes, taking a 5-0 win over Cal State Northridge Saturday at Matador Field. The shutout was the second ever in the young Roadrunner program history, the first coming in a 3-0 final over Washington State on Mar. 28.
Bakersfield improved to 14-15 on the season while the Matadors dropped to 16-14 overall, falling by shutout for the first time this season.
The Roadrunners put single runs on the board in the first and second, courtesy of solo home runs by Martin Medina and Jason Kudlock. In the third, Bakersfield rallied with two outs to push a third run across the plate. Kyle Richardson drew a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error by Matador pitcher Paul Tremlin and scored on a Medina single up the middle.
In the fourth, Jeremy Rodriguez walked, moved to second on a Kudlock single, to third on a Kevin Younger fielder's choice and scored on a double down the left field line by JJ Henry.
The Roadrunners added a final run in the sixth when Kudlock reached on a fielding error by Tremlin, advanced to second on a single by Younger, to third on a Henry ground out and scored on Derek Geisinger single down the left field line.
Reyes retired six straight batters to begin the game before giving up a ground-rule double to Nate Ring to open the third. With one out, TS Reed walked, Ridge Carpenter lined out to center and Drew Muren walked to load the bases. But Reyes worked his way out of trouble by getting Ryan Pineda to fly out to short to end the inning.
Dominic Piazza led off the sixth with a single down the right field line and Reed hit-and-run single through the right side, moving Piazza to third. But Carpenter grounded into a double play as CSUB first baseman Derek Geisinger tagged his own bag then threw home to Rodriguez to catch Piazza at the plate. Reyes then recorded the third out on his own with a strikeout to preserve the shutout for another inning.
Reyes (2-1) continued to hold the Matadors in check through the final three innings, allowing just one base runner in each of the final frames for his first career complete game. He finished with four strikeouts to go along with four walks and six hits allowed.
Medina and Kudlock finished with two hits each while Rodriguez, Younger, Henry and Geisinger added one hit apiece. Brandon Boren's 16-game hit streak came to a halt after the senior second baseman went 0-for-4 at the plate.
Tremlin (5-4) took the loss for Cal State Northridge after giving up seven hits and three walks for five runs, three earned. He also collected six strikeouts.
The teams conclude their three-game series in Northridge Sunday at 1 p.m.
