BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Martin Medina and Garrett Branske pounded out four hits each and pitcher Jonathan Montoya had his best outing of the season at the CSUB baseball team ran past Stony Brook University, 14-2, Wednesday at Hardt Field.
Stony Brook (8-12), on the tail end of a six-game swing through southern California, scored twice in the top of the first, but was shut out for the remainder of the game. Bakersfield, meanwhile, moved to 12-11 on the season and scored 14 unanswered runs on 21 hits.
Ryan McIntyre's one-out single up the middle scored a pair of runs for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the first. Branske then collected his first hit of the game, an RBI single up the middle, to give CSUB a 3-2 advantage.
The Roadrunners added two more runs in the third, courtesy a two-run home run to left by Branske. Jeremy Rodriguez also scored on the play after reaching by being hit by pitch.
McIntyre's fifth-inning RBI triple made it 6-2 in favor of the Roadrunners and a Jason Kudlock RBI-single and McIntyre RBI-ground out put CSUB ahead 8-2 through six complete innings.
Bakersfield added two more runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to account for the 12-run spread.
Medina went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and one run scored. Branske was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Brandon Boren increased his hit streak to 11 consecutive games with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, and four other Roadrunners had two hits apiece.
On the mound, Montoya (2-2) fanned a season high seven batters while walking just one and scattering four hits for two runs in six innings. Spenser Messmore struck out three and allowed just one hit in two innings of relief. Zach Arneson recorded one strikeout in one inning of work.
G.C. Yerry (1-1) took the loss for the Seawolves, giving up seven hits for five runs in four innings. Stony Brook got a pair of hits each from leadoff Pat Cantwell and William Carmona.
The Roadrunners head up the 99 Thursday to face Fresno State at 6:05 p.m. The two teams then travel back to Hardt Field in Bakersfield for a 2:30 p.m. start on Friday and a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.
