BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — San Jose State's Blake McFarland fanned eight and scattered six hits for two runs in his second complete game of the season, handing the CSUB baseball team a 10-2 Saturday at Hardt Field.
After pounding out 20 hits for 17 runs in the first match-up of the three-game series, the Roadrunners (8-9) managed just six in the second game, scoring solo runs in the third and ninth.
The Spartans (9-8), meanwhile, got a hold of CSUB starter Jonathan Montoya early, forcing the lefty to the bench after just 2.2 innings. He gave up three walks, four hits and three earned runs while striking out just one in that span.
Two walks, a double and an RBI-single by Chris Carrillo gave San Jose State their first run in the second. The Spartans added a second on a Breyon Canez sacrifice fly before Montoya drew a ground out to short to end the inning.
With two outs in the third, the Spartans stayed alive when Corey Valine reached on a fielding error by CSUB's Brandon Boren. That opened the door as Zack Jones reached on a single, Kerry Jenkins was hit by a pitch and Valine scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the inning, Bakersfield tallied a run on a RBI-single by Kyle Richardson. Joey Mills scored on the play after being hit by a pitch and advancing to second on a single. But the Roadrunners went cold for the next five innings while the Spartans added a single run in the fourth, two in the seventh and four in the ninth.
Richardson had two hits for Bakersfield while Boren, Jeremy Rodriguez, Mills and Mick Gaston added one each. Gaston entered as a pinch hitter in the ninth and stroked a solo home run on the 1-0 offering.
Jason Martin led San Jose State at the plate, going 4-for-6. Jones, Carrillo and Canez added a pair of hits each.
The Roadrunners and Spartans conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hardt Field.
