BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSUB baseball team tied a season high with 20 hits to earn a 17-7 win over San Jose State in the opening match-up of a three-game series Friday at Hardt Field.
Bakersfield moved back up to an even 8-8 while the Spartans fell for the second consecutive game, dropping to 8-8 on the year.
The Roadrunners' bats were hot from the get-go as they opened the home half of the first inning with seven hits for six runs, going the entire way through the lineup, plus one. Kyle Richardson, Martin Medina, Jason Kudlock and Joey Mills all provided RBI-hits in the inning, including a two -run homer by Medina and a two-run double by Kudlock.
Jeremy Rodriguez, who went 4-for-5 to lead CSUB, added an RBI-single in the second inning to give the Roadrunners a quick 7-0 lead.
San Jose State fought back into the game with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Spartans first two runs were courtesy of a double to right by Craig Hertler which plated Breyon Canez and Michael Reiling. Canez reached on a fielder's choice and Reiling reached on a single to right.
In the fifth, CSUB starter Mickey Jannis caught leadoff hitter Corey Valine with a swinging strikeout, but Valine reached first on a passed ball on the final strike. He later scored an unearned run on a ground out by Canez. Reiling sacrificed in the second run on a fly ball to right. Alex Sofranac scored on the play after reaching on a walk.
The Roadrunner offense was not finished, however, as they added two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the eighth, pushing their lead to 17-5.
San Jose State tallied four hits to score a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, before reliever Nick Shannon closed out the game by getting Reiling to ground out to second.
Jannis picked up his second win of the season after striking out four and allowing four hits and two earned runs. Brandon Van Dam struck out a pair and scattered five hits for three runs in 3.2 innings before Shannon recorded the final out. Shannon, a redshirt junior, was making his first appearance in more than a year after having Tommy John surgery last spring.
Spartan starter Sean Martin (1-1) took the loss, giving up three walks, nine hits and eight earned runs in four innings. Dylan Morrow pitched the final four innings, giving up 11 hits for seven earned runs.
Every Roadrunner starter recorded at least one hit, let by Rodriguez's four. Brandon Boren, Richardson and Medina added three apiece. Medina added to his team-leading extra-base hit totals, tallying his fourth home run of the season and his eighth and ninth doubles.
The Roadrunners and Spartans continue their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hardt Field.
