SAN FRANCISCO — For a second consecutive day, the CSUB baseball team got a standout performance from its starting pitcher, but could give no help on offense, falling 2-0 Wednesday to the University of San Francisco.
Sophomore Brandon Van Dam (0-1), in his first start of the year, came one strikeout shy of the program record, fanning nine batters in seven innings. He also surrendered just three hits, three walks and one earned run, before being relieved in the eighth inning.
Despite his efforts, the Roadrunners (5-7) continued to struggle at the plate, totalling just four hits on the day. They looked to break out of their slump in the sixth when Martin Medina struck with the first hit of the game, a double to left field. Jason Kudlock followed with a single through the left side, moving Medina to third. But on the ensuing play, Garrett Branske grounded out to the pitcher and Medina was doubled out on an attempt to reach home. Ryan McIntyre then grounded out to first for the final out of the inning.
The Dons got on the board in the fourth inning with a single unearned run. With one out, Derek Poppert reached on a fielding error by CSUB left fielder Mick Gaston, then advanced to second. Poppert stole third during the next at bat, then scored on a Ryan Lipkin single to left center.
San Francisco added their second run in the eighth when Jason Mahood scored on a bases-loaded double play. Mahood reached on a walk to lead off the inning.
The Roadrunners return to Hardt Field Friday to begin a three-game series against the University of Nevada. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
