SAN FRANCISCO — CSUB junior Matt Reyes had a solid performance on the mound, but he got little support from his offense as the Roadrunners baseball team fell 3-0 to the University of San Francisco Tuesday at Benedetti Diamond.
In his second start of the season, Reyes (1-1) struck out eight, walked four and scattered eight hits in 7.1 innings of work. He allowed one run on two hits in the first, one run on a walk and a hit in the fourth and one run on two hits in the fifth, but otherwise kept the Dons out of scoring position.
The Roadrunners continued to struggle at the plate, however, managing just five hits, off of six total San Francisco pitchers. Catcher Garrett Branske, playing in the place of an injured Jeremy Rodriguez, was the lone bright spot, going 3-for-3 on the day. Brandon Boren and Joey Mills also had one hit each.
San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the first when leadoff Pete Lavin double to left, advanced to third on a Connor Bernatz ground out and scored on an RBI-single by Stephen Yarrow.
In the fourth, Travis Higgs reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to right by Matt Chavez. The Dons added their final run in the fifth when Bernatz led off with a double to right and scored on a single to left by Derek Poppert.
With two runners on base, Erik Draxton pitched the final two outs of the eighth for CSUB, catching both Mason Morioka and Chavez to strike out swinging. But San Francisco closer Doug Murray recorded three consecutive outs in the top of the ninth to end any hope of a late Roadrunner rally.
CSUB (5-6 overall) and San Francisco (6-6 overall) face off again Wednesday at 2 p.m. The Roadrunners return to Hardt Field Friday to begin a three-game series against the University of Nevada. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
