BAKERSFIELD – In its third game in five days, the CSUB women's basketball team got behind early on and couldn't mount a come back as it dropped a 98–78 decision to the University of Dayton on Wednesday afternoon.
Dayton (7–5) began the game on fire as it used a 12–2 run to jump out to a 10–point lead through the first three minutes. CSUB (8–8) hit two free throws to get itself on in the score column and freshman Tyonna Outland (Compton, Calif./Lynwood HS) continued her scoring trend, knocking down her first jumper of the game to give the Roadrunners four points.
Sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) put up 15 points through the opening half, however, CSUB found itself down by as many as 14 at one point. Behind six–made free throws by freshman guard Cebrina Johnson (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS), the Roadrunners cut the deficit down to nine heading into halftime (47–38).
Dayton went 20–37 (54.1%) from the field in the first, including 4–7 from behind the arc while CSUB matched the Flyers' three–point effort (3–7) but only hit 12 of 32 (37.5%) from the floor.
Junior forward Jana Smith (Tehachapi, Calif./Tehachapi HS) got the 'Runners off to a better start in the second half as she sunk a jumper in the first minute. Unfortunately for the Roadrunners, the momentum stayed with Dayton, as the Flyers managed to build a 21–point lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the game.
Outland scored 12 points in the final period and sophomore guard Lauren Carter (Moorpark, Calif./Moorpark HS) added eight, however, it wasn't enough as Dayton continued its sharp–shooting effort and cruised to a 20–point victory.
Six players finished with double–digit scoring for the Flyers while Williams led all players with a season–high 23 points. The only other 'Runner to get into double–figures was Outland, who finished with 19. Williams also added five rebounds, as she and senior guard Breana Fields (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) (5 rebounds) led the 'Runners on the boards.
CSUB will close out its 2010 portion of the season in exciting fashion as it heads to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational Dec. 28–30. The Roadrunners will face UNLV Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. PST to tip–off the tournament.
