Men?s Soccer Senior Day Spoiled by Heartbreaking OT Loss

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Despite out shooting Seattle University by a total of 19-4 on Sunday afternoon, the CSUB men's soccer team gave up a goal in the fifth minute of overtime to drop its final regular season match of the 2010 season.

The 'Runners set the offensive tone right from the kickoff as Richard Menjivar won the ball from the Seattle midfield and went streaking down the sideline forcing the RedHawks goalkeeper Ivan Dizsar to make an early save. Ten minutes later CSUB threatened again when midfielder Peter Carlson sent the ball across the front of the goal but a sliding Jesus Sanchez sent his shot just wide of the post.  With three minutes left in the first half the Roadrunners' Justin Finch had appeared to head in the go-ahead goal however it was called back as the defender was whistled offside. Despite outshooting Seattle by an 8-2 margin, the game remained scoreless at the half.

CSUB carried that momentum into the second half with its first chance to score coming just eight minutes in as Sanchez found Ernesto Hinojosa alone behind the Seattle defense however Dizsar was there to make the save.  Seattle got off just one shot in the second half when the CSUB defense miscleared a ball but goalkeeper Eric Shannon came up with a big save from point-blank range to keep the game scoreless. The 'Runners took five shots and earned a corner kick in the final five minutes of regulation however they were unable to finish any of the chances, sending the game into overtime.

Four minutes into overtime, midfielder Ken Taylor appeared to be in the box when he was fouled from behind, however the ball was placed just outside the 12-yard box. After the Seattle defense cleared the 'Runners free kick attempt, RedHawk midfielder Kevin Cook picked up a misplayed ball at midfield and went at the CSUB defense. Cook played the ball to midfielder Marshall Kosaka who was making a run and Kosaka chipped the ball just over the reach of CSUB goalkeeper Eric Shannon to give Seattle the game-winning goal.

Six CSUB seniors were honored before the start of the match as defenders Uddie Garcia, Alberto Navarro, Anthon Snygg, Wayne Lampart, forward Robbie Gouk and midfielder Peter Carlson all played their final match at Main Soccer Field.

With the loss CSUB moves to 10-6-3 overall and 5-2-3 in MPSF play. The Roadrunners secured the second seed in next week's MPSF Tournament, which means they earned a first-round bye.

Despite the heartbreaking overtime loss to Seattle, CSUB head coach Simon Tobin is confident heading into the tournament.

“It is a tough loss to take with us to Sacramento,” Tobin says. “But we still secured the first-round bye and it is good to go into the tournament knowing what we have to do.

CSUB will face the winner of the first-round game between New Mexico and UNLV on Friday, November 12, at 11:00 a.m. in Sacramento, Calif.
