BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB baseball team surrendered seven runs on seven hits in the opening two innings and eventually fell 13-2 to Loyola Marymount Wednesday at Hardt Field.
The Lions (26-12) found the ball early and often against Roadrunner starting pitcher Brandon Van Dam, as a Kyle Spraker single followed by a Ryan Wheeler home run to right-center field gave LMU a 2-0 lead in the opening inning.
In the top of the second, Ryan Hawthorne knocked a three-run homer over the center field fence and Wheeler tallied home run No. 2, a two-run shot to left, to put the Lions ahead 7-0.
Bakersfield (9-30) struggled early against LMU starter Jordan McClintick (4-1), managing just two hits and one run in five innings. Martin Medina broke up McClintick's no-hitter with a triple to left in the bottom of the fifth. Derek Geisinger then knocked a single up the middle to plate Medina.
The Roadrunner's only other run came in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run to right by Ryan McIntyre, his third of the season.
Van Dam (0-3) settled down after the first two innings, but concluded his appearance by giving up 10 hits for 10 runs along with three walks and three strikeouts. Jonathan Montoya pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out four, while giving up a pair of hits for three runs. Korie Walkley pitched the final 1 1/3, allowing just one hit.
Medina had two hits on the day, a double and triple, while Kyle Richardson, McIntyre and Geisinger rounded out the Roadrunner offense.
Bakersfield breaks from action until Tuesday, May 5, when they travel to Los Angeles for a 6 p.m. match-up against UCLA.
