'Runners Drop Second Straight to No. 16 Cal Poly

 

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ? A day after the CSUB baseball team out-hit No. 16 nationally-ranked Cal Poly, the Mustangs found their bats, banging out 16 hits for 15 runs in a 15-3 win over the Roadrunners Saturday at Baggett Field.

An RBI double and RBI ground out in the bottom of the first gave Cal Poly a 2-0 lead early. But it was the bottom of the sixth where the Mustangs blew the game open, stringing together seven hits for six runs to go up 8-0.

Cal Poly (13-4) opened the inning with three consecutive singles, followed by a Luke Yoder double to left-center that sent two runners across home plate. A pair of fly outs followed, but the Mustangs rallied with a Ross Brayton two-RBI single and a Ryan Lee two-RBI single before the Roadrunners forced a fly out to end the inning.

The Mustangs added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the eighth.

Bakersfield (4-12) scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth on RBI hits by Jeremy Rodriguez and Brandon Boren, and an RBI ground out by Stuart Smith. Boren and Martin Medina had two hits apiece to lead the ?Runners.

Bakersfield's starting pitcher Erik Draxton ran into trouble early, surrendering 11 hits and 10 runs in 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by Garrett Branske. Six total ?Runners pitched in the game, but none were able to slow down the

Wes Dorrell and J.J. Thompson each had three hits and two runs batted in while Yoder added three RBIs and one hit. Starting pitcher Matt Leonard struck out three, walked two, scattered six hits and two runs in six innings, earning his third win of the season. Reliever Mason Radeke also picked up his first save of the season.    

The series between Bakersfield and Cal Poly concludes Sunday and Monday in Bakersfield with games times scheduled for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
