Roadrunners Fall to Spartans

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
The CSUB women's soccer team dropped a Sunday afternoon contest to San Jose State, 2–0, on the Main Soccer Field. The loss moves the Roadrunners to 5–10–2 for the year while the Spartans extend their school–record unbeaten streak to 13–games, improving to 10–4–3.

The CSUB defense held strong in the opening 45 minutes, allowing just one shot coming with three minutes remaining in the half. On the other side of the field, the Roadrunner offense generated numerous chances but none were able to find the back of the net. Fourteen minutes into the game, junior Leanne Tucker (Cambridge, England/Cambridge City) sent a pass in that junior Denise Hernandez (Tulare, Calif./Fresno City College) redirected to freshman Yesenia Reyes (Bakersfield, Calif./Ridgeview HS). Reyes got off a quick shot and it took a great diving save by Spartan keeper Nina Butera to keep the game scoreless. One minute later, junior Faith Perry (Glendora HS) found Hernandez who had a clear look at the goal but fired a shot just wide.

Sophomore Kassi Massey (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) took a shot that just clipped the cross bar in the 23rd minute and a minute later, Hernandez had a strike that gain Butera had to make a diving stop on. One of CSUB's better chances came on a free kick in the 40th minute as junior Tara Corcoran (La Verne, Calif./Cerritos College) launched a shot from 30 yards out that hit the post and deflected wide.

CSUB held a 5–1 shot advantage in the first half as the team's broke for halftime tied, 0–0.

Perry had CSUB's best look in the second half as SJSU's Danielle Anderson, who replaced Butera midway through the half, played a pass directly back to Perry. The junior tried to chip it over the keeper but Anderson made the save.

The Spartans tallied goals in the 52nd and 77th minute by Kelsey Lord and Katie Bonadies, respectively. Emmy Belding and Roxy Kamal combined for the assists on Lord's goal and Lauren Ng–Pinkerton got the assist on Bonadies' strike.

CSUB outshot the Spartans, 13–7, and earned seven corner kicks to SJSU's three. The Roadrunners were whistled for 14 fouls to the Spartans' eight and were called offsides eight times. Hernandez led the team with three shots while Corcoran and Reyes each had a pair. In her second career start in goal, sophomore Jessica Montaño (Placentia, Calif./El Dorado HS) made three saves. Butera and Anderson each had two for SJSU.

"Sometimes that is just the way the game goes," Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke said. "You outshoot a team an dlose by two. It was a tale of two halves. It really shows you the importance of capitalizing on the chances we created in the first half. I thought (Alexandria) Ngo and Tara played exceptionally well."

Up next, CSUB will head halfway across the country to take on the North Dakota Fighting Sioux on Friday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m.
