BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? San Jose State scored early, then added an insurance goal late, spoiling CSUB's men's soccer team home debut in a 2-0 final Sunday afternoon on the CSUB Main Soccer Field.
The Roadrunners, who played their first 10 matches of the season on the road, found Sunday's match their fifth in the past 10 days.
Unlike their strong start against UC Irvine on Friday, the ?Runners lacked an early offensive push and San Jose State was able to break through in the 17th minute. Josh Boemecke slotted a long ball up the middle of the field where Nick Cukar collected it near the top of the box and sent a shot to the right post past the reach of CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski.
Midway through the second half, Bakersfield appeared to gain a chance at an equalizer when Spartan keeper Lewis Sweeney was caught well outside the box during a ?Runner attack. Sweeney dove and blocked a shot by Peter Carlson, which the CSUB bench felt was a hand ball, but no call was made on the play.
As the ?Runners were pressing forward late in the match, the Spartans were able to add an insurance goal on a short drop pass from Ricky Dorrego found Efrain Burgos, Jr., who drilled the ball into the right side of the net for the 2-0 advantage.
San Jose State (4-1-3 overall) finished with a 15-10 shot advantage, while Bakersfield held a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks. Trojanowski finished with three saves for CSUB while Sweeney made four saves in his third shutout of the season.
Bakersfield (2-9-0 overall) heads back out on the road next week, facing Loyola Marymount on Thursday, then heading to Washington for a Saturday match-up against Seattle. The ?Runners return home Oct. 7 to host The Master's College.
