SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ? A header by Cal Poly's David Zamora in the 103rd minute of play broke a 2-2 tie as the CSUB men's soccer team fell 3-2 to the Mustangs at Alex G. Spanos Stadium Wednesday.
The action-packed match included 41 total shots, 26 by the Mustangs and 15 by the ?Runners, to go along with five Cal Poly saves and nine for CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski
After Bakersfield dominated the opening 10 minutes of the match, including getting off pair of quality shot opportunities, it was the Mustangs who struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Cal Poly's Wes Feighner had a shot saved by Trojanowski in the 17th minute, but made good on his second attempt, slotting the ball to the far post from the right side of the box. Kyle Montgomery was credited with the assist on the goal.
Just five minutes later, Matt Shaxton recorded the equalizer for CSUB. After the ball was built out the back and up the left flank, Oscar Coppieters beat a pair of Cal Poly defenders near the top of the box. He then slotted a short pass to Shaxton who drilled a shot past Eric Branagan-Franco from 10 yards out.
At the 34:37 mark, Bakersfield took lead on a turnover in the Mustang backfield. Anthon Snygg's long ball up the right flank ended up at the feet of the Mustangs' Daniel Gray. Gray attempted a pass back to Branagan-Franco, but ?Runner forward Towa Manda rushed forward to challenge the 50-50 ball and Branagan-Franco was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick attempt.
Manda made good on the PK, slotting the ball into the right corner of the net, for the 2-1 halftime lead.
Cal Poly (5-2-1 overall) made it a 2-2 tie 14 minutes into the second half when Daniel Cummings took a long cross from Jose Garcia and beat Trojanowski one-on-one.
The Mustangs nearly took the lead at the 76:13 mark when they were rewarded a penalty kick for a tackle in the box. But Trojanowski made his second PK save of the season, preserving the tie.
The team's went scoreless in the first 10-minute overtime period, but just 2:02 into the second period, Zamora connected his head on a Jacob Hustedt cross for the gamewinner.
The road-worn ?Runners (2-7-0 overall) conclude their 10-match season-opening road swing Friday when they travel to face UC Irvine in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
