Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Short-Handed `Runners Drop First Loss to UNLV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Playing without its two Preseason All-Conference honors, the Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team came up short in a comeback attempt Saturday night at the Main Soccer Field. Missing defender Filip Arras and goalkeeper Zenden Hart from the starting lineup, the Roadrunners fell behind early against UNLV and were unable to close the gap in the 2-1 loss.

Key Facts
  • Bakersfield's short-handed defeat was the first loss of the season for the `Runners.
  • CSUB gave up a pair of goals in the first 17 minutes, but then looked the better team over the remainder of the game.
  • The `Runners outshot the Rebels 19-10 on the night, but UNLV held off Bakersfield's advances to earn the road victory.
  • Senior Jesse Wangusi scored the lone goal for Bakersfield, netting his first goal since the 2024 season while taking five shots on the night.
First Half

UNLV got on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute of the game when an unlucky 50-50 ball bounced off of CSUB's goalkeeper and trickled into the back of the net. Two minutes later, a hard blast from the Rebels beat the outstretched hands of the `Runner keeper as UNLV increased its lead to 2-0.

Five minutes before the first period ended, Wangusi sliced and diced his way to the front of the net and buried a pass from Armon Haghighat. The late Bakersfield goal cut CSUB's deficit in half and gave the `Runners momentum as they headed into the second period.

Second Half

With all of the momentum on their side, the `Runners continued to pressure the Rebels, outshooting UNLV 11-1 in the final 45 minutes. Despite the offensive onslaught, Bakersfield came up unlucky multiple, including hitting the crossbar once and the post on another attempt.

UNLV limped away with the 2-1 victory despite the `Runners looking the better side for the majority of the game.
