WESTWOOD, Calif. ? CSUB sophomore Katina Fruguglietti topped four UCLA athletes to claim the top mark in the women's hammer throw, 153-07, at the UCLA Invitational at Drake Stadium in Westwood. Fruguglietti was one of a handful of track and field athletes who turned in solid performances Saturday.
In the men's hammer throw, junior Steve Trojanowski and freshman Derek Johnson placed second (172-06) and third (153-02), respectively, behind only former ?Runner Arnaldo Cueto (213-08).
Johnson also turned in a personal record in the discus throw, with a 173-01, fifth place finish. That mark surpassed last week's throw by nearly two feet.
Senior Brian Lopez placed second in the javelin with a 182-00 top throw, while freshman Ryan Nichols recorded personal records in the 100 meter dash (11.09) and the 200 meter dash (22.39). Fellow freshman David Charleston turned in a pair of sixth place finishes, jumping 21-04 in the long jump and 44-03.5 in the triple jump.
On the women's side, sophomore Sheena Cooper cut .13 seconds off her 100 meter dash time from a week ago, placing fourth in 12.42.
Next Friday and Saturday, Bakersfield heads to the Northridge Invitational on the campus of Cal State Northridge.
