SEATTLE ? Second half goals by Towa Manda and Manny Guzman brought the CSUB men's soccer team back from a 1-0 first-half deficit and let the Roadrunners to a 2-1 victory over Seattle University Saturday at Championship Stadium.
The win ended a five match losing streak for the ?Runners (3-10-0 overall) and marked the second time this season CSUB used consecutive second-half goals to overcome an early deficit. Bakersfield achieved that feat on Sept. 7, scoring three straight to claim a 3-2 overtime win over Cal State Fullerton. With the loss, Seattle dropped to 6-3-1 on the season.
Fighting the rain and gusting wind in Seattle Saturday, the ?Runners were on their heals early, fending off a Redhawk surge that featured three shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes of play. CSUB keeper Steve Trojanowski came up with a trio of big saves on those shots, but Seattle finally broke through at the 35:18 mark when Andrew Kreiter tallied his second goal of the season on an assist by Wesley Van Hooser.
Despite finishing with an 11-4 shot advantage, Seattle did not have a shot on goal for the remainder of the game and the Roadrunner offense picked up in the second half.
Manda put away the equalizer in the 52nd minute, heading in a cross from fellow forward Matt Shaxton for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Following a shot by Seattle's Chris Hughes in the 74th minute, Bakersfield quickly countered with freshman Chris Widdy slotting a short cross to Guzman, who buried a shot into the lower left corner of the net, giving the ?Runners the 2-1 advantage. Guzman's goal was his third of the season, all game-winning goals for CSUB.
After taking the lead, the Bakersfield defense kept a clamp on the Redhawks, giving up just one shot to the home team in the final 15 minutes of play.
CSUB returns to its home turf for three of its final five matches of the season, beginning with an Oct. 7 meeting with The Master's College. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on the Main Soccer Field.
