BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB wrestling team took down the visiting Embry-Riddle Eagles Wednesday night, claiming a big 44-6 dual meet victory in the Icardo Center. A trio of Roadrunners earned victories by virtue of quick pins in their first dual meet of the season.
At 149, senior Jeremy Doyle got things started off with a huge 17-2 technical fall win over No. 6 NAIA nationally ranked Trace Billett. Doyle went up 8-2 in the first period and a pair of three-point near falls in the final minute of the second period ended the match at the 4:37 mark.
Freshman Trevor Hall followed Doyle's performance with a 6-4 decision over Eli Arismendez in the 157 division. Hall held a narrow 2-1 lead after the first period and gained one more point on a second-period escape. In the third period, Arismendez tied the score 4-4 on a takedown, but an escape and takedown by Hall was enough for the two-point victory.
The 165 match-up was one of the most anticipated of the night as CSUB's Daniel Atondo avenged an early-season 8-6 loss to reining NAIA national champion Hayden Harrison by pinning the No. 1 ranked junior at the 3:50 mark.
CSUB's only loss of the dual came at 174 with No. 2 nationally ranked Calvin DeVault pinned junior Jason Points in 1:47.
At 197 CSUB junior Garth Wara pinned Justin Masotti in 1:07 while at 133 freshman Justin Durham pinned Franky Villaescusa in 1:11. Freshman Elijah Nacita closed out the dual with a 11-5 decision over Tyler Change. Nacita used a six-point third period to open up a close match and come away with the win.
In the 125 and heavyweight divisions, Zack Bigboy and Ryan Bergman earned forfeit victories for CSUB, which remained a perfect 4-0 all-time against the Eagles.
The ?Runners travel to Atherton, Calif., on Sunday to take part in the 10-team Menlo Invitational before returning home on Jan. 12 to host a pair of Pac-10 dual meets. Boise State and Arizona State both travel to Bakersfield for Pac-10 action in the Icardo Center.
