BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Garth Wara and Daniel Atondo knocked off a pair of top 20 nationally ranked opponents Saturday as the CSUB wrestling team topped Pac-10 foe Arizona State 22-13 in the Icardo Center.
At 197, Wara took down No. 17 Jason Trulson in a thrilling 3-1 sudden death overtime, 9-7. Trulson held a 6-3 lead after the end of the second period, but Wara mounted a comeback with two escapes and a takedown to take a 7-6 lead at the end of the third period.
Trulson earned one point for riding time, forcing the overtime period. Forty-six seconds in, Wara surged with a takedown and perhaps the biggest victory of his career.
Seven bouts later, Atondo, wrestling at 165, escaped early in the second period to take a 1-0 lead on No. 12 Patrick Pitsch. Pitsch then escaped to start the third period, but with ten seconds remaining Atondo picked up two points on a takedown, claiming the 3-1 decision.
Ryan Bergman (285), Elijah Nacita (141), Jason Points (174) and Jeremy Doyle all won by decision while at 157, Daniel Alejandro picked up a 12-3 major decision over Alex Pavlenko. Doyle's 12-8 win over Orlando Jimenez gave the senior grappler his team-leading 20th of the season.
CSUB (2-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-10) got off to a rough start earlier in the day, falling 35-6 to No. 25 ranked Boise State. The Roadrunners only points of the afternoon came in in a forfeit win by freshman Trevor Hall. Hall earned the six-point win in the 157 division after Boise State's Tyler Shefrey failed to make weight.
At 141, Nacita nearly had a technical fall win in the bag, holding a 14-1 advantage over the Broncos' Cam Jones. But 44 seconds into the final period, Jones turned Nacita onto his back and earned the victory by pin.
Five bouts were determined by decision, while a pair of Boise State wrestlers earned major decision wins. The final two matches ended in a pin.
The ?Runners are on the road for a trio of Pac-10 duals next week. On Friday, CSUB faces off against University of Oregon and Oregon State while Saturday features a match-up with Portland State.
