MORAGA, Calif. ? Junior goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski had another big match and Freshman midfielder Oscar Coppieters made him a winner with his first collegiate goal as the CSUB men's soccer team defeated Saint Mary's College 1?0 Saturday afternoon in Moraga.
Coppieters' deflected in a Javier Barba shot in amidst a tangle of bodies in the penalty area in the 74th minute for the lone goal of the match. Saint Mary's threw everything forward in the final 10 minutes, creating some strong chances in the process, but could not solve Trojanowski as the junior from La Verne earned his first shutout of the season.
“Steve came up big again today,” said CSUB Head Coach Simon Tobin. “He made some big saves in the first half to keep us in the match then allowed us to maintain our lead when they came at us late.”
Trojanowski made eight saves Saturday and lowered his goals against average to 1.58 for the season.
The match followed the typical pattern of Roadrunner efforts so far in their first NCAA Division I campaign. The Gaels owned the majority of possession and scoring chances in the first half before CSUB responded in the second half. As the did against Long Island University Thursday night, the 'Runners built advantages in shots and corner kicks in the second half leading up to Coppieters' goal.
“This is a very difficult place to play because Saint Mary's is a quality team and makes it difficult,” said Tobin. “But I thought from about 10 minutes into the second half until about 10 minutes remained in the match that we were playing the better soccer.
“We had to soak up a bit of pressure there at the end when they created a few scoring chances, but I thought our effort was deserving of a victory and I'm very pleased that we were able to come out of this match with a win.”
The 'Runners will continue their three?match roadtrip Monday in Southern California when they head to Orange County to take on UC Irvine. Kickoff for that match will be a 7 p.m.
