SACRAMENTO ? Early goals have been the bane of the CSUB women's soccer team so far this season. An early goal once again buried the Roadrunners Friday as they fell in their first?ever visit to Sacramento State 2?0.
Sac State (5?2?1 overall) scored on two of its first three shots on goal. The first came in the 16th minute when Katelin Hopping volleyed home a cross from Kim Kemper. Seven minutes into the second half Amanda Gray redirected a Danielle Holloway deflection in the box and CSUB's day was done.
“We played very well in the second half,” said Bakersfield Head coach Nicole Van Dyke. “They didn't break us down much but they scrapped for their two goals and that was the difference.”
Bakersfield (2?7?0) played both halves shorthanded. Already missing Moriah Neville to an ankle injury, CSUB lost Jasmine Henderson and Brittany Getz two of its remaining four strikers, to potentially season?ending injuries during training this week.
Nevertheless, the Roadrunners nearly got the early jump when Alexa Vickroy got behind the defense in the third minute but sent her shot straight at Hornet goalkeeper Mandy Trojan. Elena Gutierrez had a golden chance to halve the deficit late, but Trojan made a big save to preserve the shutout.
The 'Runners will continue their five?match road trip Sunday when they head west on I?80 to face the University of San Francisco. CSUB returns home Oct. 12 to host Houston Baptist.
