WILDCAT NOTES: Weber lost four in a row after beating CSUB on Nov. 19... bounced back to beat NAIA member Montana Western 94-84 Friday...Weber went 1-for-20 from behind the arc in the win...for the season WSU is now shooting 41 pct. from long range...Sr. F Arturus Valeika, who had a 12?point, 11?reound double-double vs. CSUB the first meeting, leads the way at 12.1 ppg and 9.1 rpg.
SERIES HISTORY: WSU took the 1st?ever meeting Nov. 19, 61?56 in Rabobank Arena...The only other times CSUB and Weber State have met in team sport competition came in wrestling...In their two wrestling encounters, CSUB defeated the Wildcats 19?15 in 1983 and 30?13 in 1984.
THIS DATE IN ROADRUNNER HISTORY: The 'Runners will play at Weber State almost 27 years to the day after earning their only win in Utah. They defeated Souther Utah 64?56 on Dec. 7, 1979.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: CSUB continues its three?game road trip at Weber State Tuesday night. The Roadrunners are looking for their first road win since defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills 81?72 on Feb. 17. They are winless in their last six road games.
WHEN LAST WE SAW THEM: After never meeting in CSUB's first 36 seasons, the 'Runners and WSU will meet for the second time in less than a month Tuesday. When they last met, it was a close one. Both teams led by as many as seven points ? but no more ? as Weber State held on for the 61?56 victory.
HOPE IT'S NOT COLD IN UTAH, TOO: No Roadrunner is hoping for a hot spell in Utah more than junior guard Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College). Dating back to the first half of the Oregon State game on Dec. 11, Johns is one for his last 26 from the field. Despite his epic cold streak, the 2007 California Junior College co?Player of the Year still leads the 'Runner offense at 14.3 points per game.
LATUNDE EXPECTED TO MISS GAME: Junior forward Santwon Latunde (Landover, Md./Cowley County College) is expected to miss his second consecutive game after suffering a shoulder injury in practice last week. His status is listed as day?to?day. At 10.6 ppg and 6.1 rpg, Latunde is Bakersfield's leading rebounder and second?leading scorer.
GRASMICK MOVES UP CAREER ASSIST LIST: Senior guard Zack Grasmick (Strathmore/Granite Hills HS) added one more assist to his larder Saturday at Cal Poly, giving him 119 for his career. That total pulls Grasmick into a tie for the No. 36 spot on the CSUB career list with Damarius Akins. He needs 18 more assists to catch Marcus Moss and crack the top 25 at 137.
CLOSING IN ON ANOTHER MILESTONE: Grasmick sank one more three?pointer Saturday night, giving him 18 for the season and 125 for his career. He needs just eight more treys to catch Dwuan Rice for No. 2 on the all?time list (133).
...AND THE LITTLE ONES SHALL LEAD THEM: With an eye towards the future, the Roadrunners continue to play a rotation that leans heavily on their younger players. Freshmen and sophomores account for 23 of CSUB's 50 total starts this season and have played 1,022 of a possible 2,000 minutes this season (51 percent).
'TIS THE SEASON TO GIVE AND RECEIVE: Freshman point guard Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) has been the most generous player on the squad this season, leading the team in assists overall (3.6 apg) and in six of the first 10 games. Recently, Johnson has started to take on the role of leading scorer as well. He has led the 'Runner offense in two of the last three games, scoring a career?high 14 points against Utah State before topping that mark with 15 at Cal Poly.
'RUNNERS AMONG THE INDEPENDENT LEADERS: Several 'Runners check in among the NCAA Division I Independent leaders in this week's rankings. At No. 4 in assists (3.6 apg),Alex Johnson is the highest?ranked CSUB player. Santwon Latunde is No. 6 in rebounding (6.1 rpg) and No. 7 in field goal percentage (50.7). Zack Grasmick is No. 6 in three?point percentage (40.9) and No. 10 in assists (2.5 apg).
Freshman forward Cory Brown (Lakeside/El Capitan HS) is No. 6 in blocked shots (1.0 bpg) while Terrence Johns holds the No. 8 spot in scoring at 14.3 ppg.
WHERE OTHERS HAVE GONE BEFORE: Making the leap from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I play is a big step. It's also a step taken by several Roadrunner rivals over the past few seasons. Bakersfield will be the sixth West Region school to make the jump since 1990. The others are: Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, UC Davis and UC Riverside.
In fact, DII and the California Collegiate Athletic Association have been jumping off points for many of the current DI programs in the West. All nine Big West Conference members are former DII schools and all but UC Irvine were formerly in the CCAA. Other former DII and CCAA schools from the West include Fresno State, Pepperdine, San Diego State and San Jose State.
'RUNNERS VS. DI COMPETITION: Although 2007?08 is the first time the Roadrunners take on a full NCAA Division I schedule, it does not mark the first Bakersfield foray into NCAA Division I play. The 'Runners own an all?time mark of 18?53 in 71 games against 35 different Division I opponents. Note that this mark does not include games against current DI teams that were not DI when they met.
36 YEARS OF CSUB BASKETBALL: The 2007?2008 season marks the 37th anniversary of Roadrunner men's basketball at CSUB. Since the program's inception in 1971?72, the Roadrunners have posted an impressive all?time record of 730?314 (.698).
