NORTHRIDGE, Calif. ? Freshman midfielder Faith Perry netted a pair of goals early in the second half, but a late score gave CSU Northridge a 3-2 win over the CSUB women's soccer team Friday afternoon.
The Roadrunners (5-10-1 overall) gave up a goal just 4:25 into the game when CSUN's Susie Mischenko chipped a short shot past the reach of CSUB keeper Nicole Padilla. CSUB nearly took a one goal deficit into the break, but a 40-yard blast by the Matadors' Tryna Tafoya with five minutes remaining gave the ?Runners a 2-0 hole to pull out of.
“We told the team (at halftime) that they could either come out and quit or come out and put a quick goal in the back of the net,” said CSUB Assistant Coach Fabian Sandoval, who assumed the head coaching responsibilities for a second straight match. “And we knew if we got one goal, we could get another.”
The ?Runners did just that 10 minutes into the second half when Perry headed in a cross from the right sideline by Natalie Haigh.
Two minutes later Perry connected her head to a cross from Moriah Neville, and just like that, the ?Runners were back in the game.
Pressing forward late and looking for the match-winner, CSUB got caught in a counter attack by the Matadors. Nalena Betancourt fed the ball up the right sideline to Kristy Krohn who crossed the ball to Salma Tarik in front of the net. Tarik controlled the ball with her body and slotted it past Padilla for the match-winner.
“Overall the team played great,” said Sandoval. “Our back four had one of their best games of the year and up front, (Alexandra) Ngo and Faith played extremely well.”
CSUB had 13 shots in the match, forcing CSUN keeper Ivette Esqueda to make five saves. Northridge, now 4-10-1 overall, also had 13 shots, while Padilla had three saves in goal for the ?Runners.
The Roadrunners head back on the road on Nov. 1 for a 7 p.m. match against Fresno State. They then return home for the season finale against Gonzaga on Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
