BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Coming off a three?week layoff, the CSUB volleyball team figured to be either rested or rusty heading into Friday's match versus fellow NCAA Division I independent member Utah Valley University.
The answer proved to be rusty as a much more active Utah Valley side swept CSUB 31?29, 30?23, 30?27 at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.
Utah Valley (13?6 overall) hit an impressive .325 on the night while making just nine errors, but its success was due more to effort than to style. The Wolverines simply limited errors and worked hard to survive rallies. The well?rested Roadrunners didn't share that commitment and it proved costly.
Bakersfield (4?13) had one good run midway through the first game, snapping an 8?8 tie with an 11?3 streak that seemingly put the Roadrunners in command at 19?11. But three consecutive CSUB errors kick?started a Wolverine comeback. The 'Runners didn't relinquish the lead until a Katherine Stevens ace made it 29?28.
Games two and three saw the Wolverines pull away at the midway point as the 'Runners tried to close late. Bakersfield closed to within 27?23 in game two and 28?27 in game three but never got over the hump as UVU completed the sweep.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Norman (Stockdale HS) led all attackers with 17 kills for CSUB. Junior middle blocker Rosemary Stribling (West HS) added 12 kills.
Freshman outside hitter Kayli Broadbent led UVU with 14 kills while senior middle blocker Jessica Endres added 12 kills and a match?high five blocks.
The Roadrunners and Wolverines will conclude their two?match series Saturday afternoon in the Icardo Center. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
