BAKERSFIELD, Calif.. — Cal State Bakersfield split a pair of duals on Sunday at the Icardo Center, falling to Ivy League power Columbia in a thriller 19-18 before returning later in the afternoon to crush San Francisco State by a huge 48-0 margin.
Between the two Bakersfield duals, Columbia also rolled past San Francisco State, 37-3.
The 48-0 win over San Francisco State was the 29th consecutive win for the Roadrunners over the Gators in the series and equals the most points that Bakersfield has ever scored against SFSU. The Roadrunners also scored 48 in a 48-4 win over SFSU in 1992.
The shutout was Bakersfield's first since a 54-0 drubbing of Portland State on Jan. 24, 2004 and was the first time the Roadrunners scored 40 points in a dual since Dec. 14, 2005, when they defeated Portland State 45-6.
It was all Bakersfield from the beginning when the Roadrunners rolled off four straight pins. Garth Wara opened the match with a fall in the third period with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match at 174. Brandon Ceremello followed at 184 with another third-period fall after leading in the match 11-2.
Brandon Halsey kept things going at 197 with a second-period fall after already holding a commanding 15-5 lead. Eric Parker wasted no time at heavyweight with a pin in 50 seconds over Gator heavyweight Vincent Bordi.
Things got tougher at 125 where Zack Bigboy wasn't able to earn the pin, but was able to pick up a 17-2 technical fall over Pierre Bondoc. At 133, John Cardenas led 6-2 with 15 seconds left in the match and was able to hold on for a 7-5 win over Ben Lockett. Matt Schumm found points hard to come by at 141 but picked up a 2-0 decision against Virgil Lockett. Brandon Doyle completed the sweep off SFSU's Lockett brothers with a 10-1 major decision at 149 over Ali Lockett.
Jeremy Doyle finished things out on the mat with a 4-3 decision over Kenneth Packard at 157 before Daniel Atondo earned a forfeit at 165.
Things didn't go nearly as well in the first match of the day. The Roadrunners found themselves down 9-0 after two matches due to a Ricky Turk pin over Garth Wara in 48 seconds in the first match, followed by Justin Barent picking up a 10-4 decision over Ernesto Ancona at 184.
But Halsey turned things around with a 9-2 decision over Nick Sommerfeld, followed by a pin by Colton Nichols in his 2006-07 home debut over Jed Wade. Brandon Zoetewey gave CSUB its first lead of the match midway through the dual with a 6-0 decision over Jerome Greco at 125, but Columbia won three of the final five matches — including a major upset — to earn the win.
Matt DeLorenzo picked up a five-point move with less than 20 seconds to go on the clock to turn a 2-0 lead into an 8-0 major decision over Thomas Kimbrell. That extra team point proved costly.
It was even more costly after Schumm, who entered the match ranked No. 16 in the nation by the NWCA, lost a major upset to Columbia's Sal Tirico at 141 pounds on another last-minute move, this time a takedown with 34 seconds to go for a 3-1 decision.
Brandon Doyle allowed a takedown with three seconds remaining but held on for a 4-3 decision over Anthony Constantino to keep the Lions in front 16-15, and Jeremy Doyle won a 6-4 decision over Derek Sickles at 157 to put the Roadrunners up 18-16 with one match to go.
But Dustin Tillman used a five-point move in the first period and withstood three stalling calls against him for a 10-8 decision over Atondo which gave the Lions the 19-18 win.
Bakersfield is now off until Jan. 19 when it travels to Tempe, Ariz., to take on two-time defending Pac-10 Champion Arizona State at 7 p.m.
