ARCATA, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield senior
Lyle Martin became the first Roadrunner to score multiple goals in 2006 with his pair of strikes on Sunday to lead Bakersfield to a 2-0 win over Humboldt State in Arcata.
Bakersfield had scored six goals as a team through the first four matches of the season and all six were scored by different players. But Martin now leads the team with three goals scored with his two goals in the win on Sunday.
While Humboldt State has not been a perennial power in recent years, the win not only improved Bakersfield's record to 4-1-0 but it also was the Lumberjacks' first loss of the season. Humboldt State drops to 3-1-0 overall.
It didn't take long for Martin to get going. He scored in the third minute when Manny Guzman sent a through ball up the middle and allowed Martin to get behind the defense. He finished to make the score 1-0.
Towa Manda continued to lead the team in assists with his third of the year when he helped with Martin's second goal that was scored in similar fashion to the first. The 27th minute goal was the final goal of the match.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski made four saves to earn his second clean sheet of the season while Humboldt State's Drew Ryan made two saves and allowed the two goals.
Just like the women's game earlier in the day, it appears that this one was dominated by the defenses. Bakersfield did outshoot Humboldt State, but only by a narrow 7-6 margin. The Lumberjacks did, however, outshoot Bakersfield 4-1 in the second half.
The Roadrunners will look to make it two wins in a row on the road when they face Cal State L.A. on Wednesday in the first half of a men's-women's doubleheader. The men are scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m.
