LA JOLLA, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield entered this weekend's match knowing that it would be a tough weekend against a pair of quality opponents, and those opponents showed just how tough they are after the Roadrunners suffered a second-straight lopsided loss, this time a 5-0 defeat at the hands of NCAA Division II No. 5 UC San Diego.
The Roadrunners took the worst loss in school history on Friday with a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Cal State Dominguez Hills, and have now been outscored 11-0 in their last two matches. Those two losses come on the heels of a 5-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus when Bakersfield appeared to be hitting its stride and playing its best soccer of the season.
This one was one-sided from the start with the Tritons outshooting Bakersfield by a large 23-5 margin. UC San Diego outshot Bakersfield 10-2 in the first half and cruised from that point on.
Megan Dickey got the Tritons on board first with a 23rd minute goal, and Kelly Cochran made it 2-0 in the 29th minute. Kathy Sepulveda made it 3-0 in the 56th minute, Chelsey Campbell added a goal in the 61st minute and Lauren Segars made it 5-0 in the 90th minute to complete the scoring by five different goal scorers on the afternoon.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Ashley Witten, who sat out Friday's match against Cal State Dominguez Hills, allowed all five goals, but also made 10 saves on the day. UCSD starting goalkeeper Jessica McGovern didn't need to make a single save in her 64 minutes of action before Mia Sherley made three saves to complete the match and preserve the shutout.
The Roadrunners will now need to win both matches at home this weekend to ensure a .500 record, which would be their first since the 2000 season. Bakersfield will face Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 7 p.m. in the first of those two matches.
