LA JOLLA, Calif. – After an entire season in which
Ryan Gay assisted
Lyle Martin on numerous goals, Martin returned the favor and assisted both goals — one to Gay — in the Roadrunners' 2-1 win over UC San Diego on Sunday.
Martin is the CCAA leader with 13 goals and Gay also leads the conference with 11 assists, but the pair switched roles on Sunday when it mattered most to give the Roadrunners the win.
Trailing 1-0 in just the 12th minute, Martin slipped Gay a pass in the box and the sophomore made no doubt about it in beating UC San Diego goalkeeper Joshua Vasquez and leveling the score.
The match remained tied until Rigoberto Pinera sent a ball to Martin who found freshman Javier Barba in the box. Barba also made easy work of the one-on-one opportunity to give the Roadrunners the lead and the eventual game-winning goal.
UC San Diego had several chances down the stretch but couldn't put a shot on target. Bakersfield outshot the Tritons by a narrow 14-12 margin, but the Roadrunners put 10 shots on target while the Tritons could manage just two shots on frame.
Steve Trojanowski needed to make just one save in the win while Vasquez made eight saves to keep the match close for the Tritons.
Despite having no postseason eligibility, the Roadrunners will look to finish the season strong as they sit one point out of first place in the CCAA South Division behind Cal State L.A. Cal State Dominguez Hills is two points out of first place and Cal Poly Pomona sits three points back.
The Roadrunners will take on Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 4;30 p.m. to lead off the final weekend of the 2006 season.
