CORVALLIS, Ore. The Cal State Bakersfield wrestling team dropped a pair of Pac10 conference dual meet on Friday, falling 2411 at Oregon and 319 at Oregon State.
It was a tough day all around for the Roadrunners, who won just five matches out of the 20 contested. While the long road trip may have had something to do with it, Bakersfield simply could not muster enough to win the close decisions.
In the early match, Oregon scored victory by decision in five of its seven wins with four decided by two points or less.
The Roadrunners lost four of the first five matches to the Ducks with heavyweight Eric Parker (Ramona HS) getting the lone victory. Parker, who won his fourth straight match, picked up a 50 decision over the Ducks Chris Dearmon. Three of the other losses came by close decision with Zack Bigboy (Minneapolis, Minn./Kennedy HS) falling 31 at 125 pounds, Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Georgia/Dawson County HS) losing 42 at 131 and Matt Schumm (Corona/Centennial HS) dropping an 87 decision at 141 pounds.
Junior Brandon Doyle (Ramona HS) ended the losing streak with a 40 decision over Stewart Bogart at 149s and sophomore Daniel Atondo (Sunnyvale/Fremont HS) followed with a 172 tech fall win over Jeremy McLaughlin at 157 pounds. That pulled the Runners to within two at 1311. However, the Ducks took the final three matches to win going away.
After a onehour drive north, the Roadrunners took on Oregon State, who is currently sitting in third place in the conference with an 821 overall record following a pair of wins today.
The Beavers showed their might by winning the first seven matches and eight of the 10 in a 319 rout over Bakersfield.
The two lone victories came at 165 and 184 pounds. Senior Brian Busby (San Diego/Scripps Ranch HS) snapped a mini threematch losing streak with a pin over Anthony Weber at 165 pounds. Busby, who had lost to the Pac10s top ranked grappler at 165 pounds earlier in the day, gave up an early takedown to Weber before scoring the quick reversal and pin.
At 184 pounds, Brandon Ceremello (Clovis HS) picked up his third victory of the year with a 64 decision over Kyle Bressler. Ceremello actually trailed Bressler by a 32 count going into the final period, but was able to score a takedown with eight seconds left and earned a pair of near fall points with one second left to win the match.
Bakersfield returns home for its final two matches of the season at the Icardo Center starting with a visit by the defending conference champs Arizona State on Sunday (Jan. 29). The match is slated to begin at 12 noon.
