Spirit Program Tryouts Draw Record Numbers as New Season Begins

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — CSU Bakersfield's Spirit Programs wrapped up a high-energy weekend of tryouts May 2-3, with more than 60 athletes competing for spots on their cheerleading, dance, and mascot teams. The two-day event, led by head coach Arthur Smith, showcased an increase in interest and talent as the program looks to build on a season of recent success.

The tryout weekend began Friday evening with a skills clinic that gave prospective team members the opportunity to work on dance routines, stunting, tumbling and the CSUB fight song. Interested members also had the opportunity to ask questions about the tryout process and expectations in the event they were selected. Those skills were then put to the test Saturday in front of a judging panel comprised of alumni and community members to determine those who would selected for the 2025-2026 season.

"Giving respect to the athletes we had last season, I think their hard work exposed our program to more athletes, and so our tryout number being up this year I think was great, but somewhat expected" Smith said. "Overall, I am very pleased with how this weekend went for all our teams from cheer, dance, all the way to mascot."

Now entering his 12th season at the helm, Smith continues to build a legacy of excellence. Fresh off another PPAACC Championship with the cheer squad and a National Championship with Rowdy the mascot—milestones that have helped raise the program's visibility on both local and national stages.

Those selected will support the Athletics Department throughout the year, cheering on teams such as men's and women's soccer, volleyball, wrestling, and basketballs. Beyond game day responsibilities, the spirit squads play an important role in promoting campus unity and engaging the community.

The cheerleading and mascot teams also remain competitive beyond the sidelines, with the ability to represent CSUB at national events like USA Collegiate Nationals held in teh early part of the Spring semester.

Looking ahead, Smith said he's optimistic about what the newly formed teams can achieve.

"Every year the goal is to represent Athletics, the University, and the community at the highest level the best way we can," he said. "I think this year we have increased our talent across all teams, so I am excited for our fans to watch these athletes represent them."

He also highlighted specific hopes for the program's growth in the coming season. "My goal for my dance team is to have them become the face of our spirit programs as it pertains to our in-game entertainment and performances." Smith said. "As for cheer and mascot, I think this year this group can really take a major step forward in cementing themselves as a highly talented program and the best in Kern County!. It's going to take work, but I think we selected a group that can do it."

The 2025-2026 season begins this summer with team practices leading into a team training camp in early August, setting the tone for what's expected to be another dynamic year for the CSUB Spirit Programs.
