The History of Rowdy

Rowdy the Roadrunner began as a student-powered symbol of campus identity. In November 1970, CSUB students selected the Roadrunner as the university's official mascot from a field of 34 options. The vote was not close: the Rowdy name won 368 to 15.

Since then, Rowdy has grown into one of the most recognizable figures in Bakersfield athletics. He represents the energy of game day, the pride of the student section, and the connection between CSUB teams, students, alumni, and the Bakersfield community.

Rowdy stepped into the national spotlight during the 2016 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, when he was voted the No. 1 mascot in the 64-team field. In 2025, Rowdy added another major achievement by winning the USA Collegiate National Championship.
