BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — CSU Bakersfield's iconic mascot, Rowdy the Roadrunner, has long been a symbol of spirit, tradition and pride — and now, national excellence.

Rowdy's story began in November 1970, when he was selected by the student body as the official mascot of CSU Bakersfield. Presented alongside 33 other options, the  Rowdy name won in a landslide vote, 368 to 15, and has since remained a central figure in CSU Bakersfield's identity locally and nationally.

Over the decades, Rowdy has gained widespread attention. During the 2016 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, Rowdy was voted the No. 1 mascot in the 64-team field — an achievement spotlighted on national platforms such as Good Morning America, as well as local stations KGET-17 and KBAK-ABC 23. He was also prominently featured during CSUB's nationally televised game against the University of Oklahoma, further cementing his status as a fan favorite.

Most recently, in 2025, Rowdy earned another prestigious honor by winning the USA Collegiate National Championship, showcasing the energy, excellence and spirit that defines CSUB Athletics. The win reflects one of CSU Bakersfield's four core pillars — Pursue Championships — and affirms Rowdy's role not just as a mascot, but as a champion in his own right.

Today, Rowdy can be found rallying fans at home sporting events, connecting with students on campus, and making appearances across the Bakersfield community — a proud Roadrunner who represents the heart of CSU Bakersfield.
