BAKERSFIELD, Calif. The CSU Bakersfield spirit squads helped kick off Thanksgiving morning by volunteering and running in the annual Bakersfield Turkey Day Run, hosted by Bakersfield Classic Events.
The Thanksgiving tradition gives the community a chance to get out of the house, enjoy some fun and fitness, and start the holiday on a positive note before spending the day with family. This year marked the largest turnout in the event's history, with more than 1,800 participants. The growth prompted organizers to design a new 5K course to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all runners and walkers.
The morning began with a costume contest featuring participants of all ages dressed in Thanksgiving themed outfits. Costumes included turkeys, cranberry sauce, stovetop stuffing and pilgrims, all competing for prizes. The contest was followed by the crowd favorite turkey call competition, where participants showed off their best turkey impressions to the delight of spectators.
Members of the Dance Team volunteered throughout the event, cheering on runners and helping staff the post race refreshments table, where they handed out donuts, coffee, fruit and other treats. Freshman Rubie Rypkema and junior Chloe Millard of the cheerleading team also represented the program by participating in the race, completing the 5K side by side in their respective age groups.
"I had fun today. I like running," Rypkema said. "Doing it with a teammate made it even better."
For the CSUB spirit squads, participating in community events like the Turkey Day Run, whether by running or volunteering, is another example of how they uphold one of the department's core pillars: community engagement through meaningful service.
