CSUB Heads to SJSU Invite, Faces Boise State Again

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A string of bad luck with postponements to many of the season's first matches did not deter the Cal State Bakersfield beach volleyball team from going on a heater to start the season. With a 6-1 record over some respectable competition, the Roadrunners are ready to perform well at the SJSU Invitational.

Quotes from Head Coach Cesar Benatti
  • "The first week being canceled gave us some extra time to practice and develop some components of our game that were important the week we actually played."
  • "Overall I consider the entire team "workhorses". Their work ethic is amazing across the board, and when someone struggles it's not due to a lack of effort, but because of the circumstance."
  • "We are looking forward to playing Boise State again. We could've played better overall to get a good result last time. We will do our homework and mentally prepare to take on this very talented team.
  • "We had two good weekends and we've been training super hard. Just like Boise, the other teams are very good and on a similar level to us in terms of investment, number of beach players, etc."
This Week's Schedule
  • SJSU Invitational hosted by SJSU in San Jose, Calif.
  • Friday, Mar. 17
    • vs (RV) Boise State, 9 a.m. (PT)
    • at San Jose State, 2 p.m. (PT)
  • Saturday, Mar. 18
    • vs San Francisco, 9 a.m. (PT)
    • vs Oregon, 12 p.m. (PT)
Notables
  • After being ranked in the AVCA Top 20 for two straight weeks of the 2022 season, the `Runners are hoping to translate their solid 2023 start into another nod in the rankings. First, a revenge win over (RV) Boise State would go a long way in getting that respect.
  • CSUB recently took on Boise State (9-4) during the tournament at CSUN, where the Broncos got the best of the 'Runners in a 4-1 Boise State victory. As CSUB's only loss so far this season, the `Runners will surely be looking to give the Broncos a match to remember.
  • The pairings of Isabella Almeida / Hayley McCluskey and Emma Erteltova / Sophia Hladyniuk had both experienced just one loss each on the season, with the latter pair actually getting the lone win during the Boise State match.
  • The `Runners will also face off against San Jose State, San Francisco, and Oregon; all teams that the `Runners have a winning record against in their respective all-time series.
  • CSUB has a golden opportunity to take advantage of its opponents misfortunes:
    • Oregon (3-11) is finding it tough to get a win, with the majority of the Ducks' matchups against AVP-ranked opponents.
    • San Francisco (0-9) is still searching for its first win after dropping three straight games against UC Davis to start the season.
    • San Jose State (5-4) will be looking for its first win in four.
