Bakersfield Falls in Series Opener at UC Irvine

Box Score Irvine, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield scored three runs in the top of the second to grab an early lead, but UC Irvine scored the final seven runs of the game to come from behind and win game one of a three-game series at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark. Aaron Casillas and James Bell each had two hits for CSUB who fell to 17-30 on the year, including a 10-15 mark in Big West Conference play. The 'Eaters improved to 30-21 and 14-11 in 2022.
 
Bakersfield outhit the Anteaters 8-7, including five singles in the top of the second inning keying their three-run rally. Catcher Angel Saldivar singled up the middle on an 0-2 pitch to score two and Casillas added a two-out RBI to make it 3-0.
 
Jaykob Acosta was a hard luck loser, allowing just six hits and three earned runs over 5.2 innings of work.
 
Anteater reliever Tanner Brooks picked up his third win with two scoreless innings of work. Bakersfield managed just two hits and struck out six times against UCI relief pitching.  

How It Happened... 
T2 | The Roadrunners pounded out five base hits in the top of the second, grabbing an early 3-0 lead. James Bell and Andrew Allanson singled, advancing to third on a Nick Salas sacrifice and scoring on an Angel Saldivar single back through the box to put CSUB on the board. Four batters later Aaron Casillas lifted a single over shortstop to score Saldivar.
 
B4 | UC Irvine's Justin Torres doubled off the wall in right field, scoring Woody Hadeen and Abraham Garcia-Pacheco who had both reached after being hit by a pitch.
 
B6 | The Anteaters grabbed their first lead of the night in the seventh, opening the frame by putting runners on the corners with no outs. CSUB starter Jaykob Acosta retired the next two batters he faced, but a throw to second on a double steal sailed into centerfield scoring the tying run and catcher Thomas McCaffrey lifted the net pitch he saw over second to make it 4-3.
 
B7 | UCI's Nathan Church added a sacrifice fly in the seventh to pad the Anteater lead and make it 5-3.
 
B8 | UC Irvine made it 7-3 in the eighth when a wild pitch and an error with the bases loaded allowed two more runs to cross the plate for the home team.

Notable...
• Bakersfield's Jaykob Acosta has received an average of just 2.5 runs per game of support across eight starts this season, fewest of any CSUB starter with at least two starts.  

• Reliever Ryan Verdugo punched out a career high five Anteaters in just 2.0 innings pitched. He allowed just one hit and walked two.
