Slayton Takes Silver, CSUB Wraps Up Big West Championships

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield men and women's track and field wrapped up the second day of the Big West Championships on Saturday. Riley Slayton was close to winning a title in the 400-meter hurdles running the second fastest time in the event. The Roadrunners had six more athletes and both 1600m relays teams add towards team scores on the final day of the conference meet.

Riley Slayton placed second in the 400H on Saturday earning the second highest finish for CSUB on the weekend. Her efforts garnered Big West All-Conference honors and a silver medal. Julia Stein improved from last year finishing seventh in the event and adding to the overall women's team score.

Thomas Richardson placed fifth in hammer throwing a career-best mark (190'11") and head home from the championship meet with a pair of scoring marks.

Hugo Santana joined Thomas Richardson in the finals and took eighth overall as he and Richardson combined for five team points in the event.

Mariah LeSure ran a sixth best time in the 100m finals race.

Curtis Threlkeld was sixth in the 800m race on Saturday.

Bakersfield's men and women's 1600m relays rounded out the scorers in both events placing eighth overall behind season bests. Riley Slayton, Julia Stein, Jaztyn Greer, and Jordan Retzloff were the women's team's leg runners while JJ Flores, SkyBlue Gonzalez, Curtis Threlkeld, Kenny Rugnau, and Derek Crawford represented the men.

"We had a good showing," said Director of Track & Field, Cross Country Marcia Mansur-Wentworth, "and I am very proud of the efforts and the accomplishments of this season."

Miranda Miller will move on to the NCAA West Regionals meet two weeks from now in Arkansas. Top 12 from there will then move on to the NCAA Championships in Oregon.
