Bakersfield Picked Eighth in Pre-Season Coaches' Poll

IRVINE – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team was picked to finish eighth in the Big West Pre-Season Coaches' Poll, as voted on by the leagues head coaches. The Roadrunners received 35 total votes to rank amongst a tight group of teams in the middle of the pack. Long Beach State was chosen as the pre-season favorite, earning 97 points, including seven first-place votes.
 
The Roadrunners were picked to finish dead last ahead of the 2021 campaign but spent much of the season amongst the league leaders before wrapping up the year with a 17-19 conference record and a seventh-place finish.
 
Bakersfield returns key starters up the middle in 2022. Angel Saldivar returns behind the plate, Aaron Casillas and Nick Salas return as the `Runner double play combination and Jashia Morrissey moves from the infield to a new role in center field. 
 
Key newcomers include redshirt freshman Andrew Allanson and University of Oregon transfers AJ Miller and James Bell.
 
A talented mix of veterans and newcomers provides a depth of options on the mound for CSUB. Jaykob Acosta, Davonte Butler, Cody Tucker are all in the mix for larger roles this season, while transfers Benji Caggianelli, Gabe Ulloa and Adrian Santa Cruz could all see time in the rotation or out of the bullpen.
 
The Roadrunners host 33 games at Hardt Field this season, including five Big West Conference series against Cal State Fullerton, Hawai'i, UC San Diego, Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara.
 
CSUB opens its non-conference schedule with a three-game series against Oakland University on Feb. 18-20. Bakersfield will also welcome Kansas State and Utah to Hardt Field for extended series, and Saint Mary's, Fresno State and Pepperdine for midweek outings.
