Pair of CSUB Records Fall on Day 2 in Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – A pair of CSU Bakersfield records fell on Day 2 of the Big Al Invitational for the Roadrunner swimming and diving teams. Upperclassmen Chelaine Van der Westhuizen and Antonio Milin each took down their respective CSUB 100 breaststroke records, each of which were set in 2011. Meanwhile, Mikayla Popham picked up another victory, this time in the 200 freestyle.

CSUB's Top Women
  • Van der Westhuizen, who is in her first season in Bakersfield after transferring from Northern Colorado, smashed Rachel McCall's 12-year-old record by half a second with a time of 1:01.63 in the 100 breast prelims. She went on to place second overall in the evening's finals.
  • Van der Westhuizen also helped Popham, Lorena Jerebic, and Holly DiSimone break into the CSUB Top 5 in the 200 medley relay (1:42.90), a feat no `Runner women's quartet had previously accomplished in a mid-season meet.
  • Popham continued on to win her second event of the meet, posting a time of 1:47.71 to finish first in the 200 freestyle. Hansen described the double victory as a "giant confidence booster" for the veteran `Runner.
  • Jerebic (55.23) and DiSimone (55.97) both posted personal best times in the 100 butterfly with the former placing fifth overall and moving into the CSUB Top 5. "Holly is really coming out of her shell here," Hansen said of the freshman.
  • Hannah Marsh broke into the CSUB Top 5 in the 400 IM with a large time drop to 4:25.41, setting herself up to be a contender at the MPSF Championships.
  • Danielle Albright also posted a season-best mark in the 100 breast (1:03.48).
CSUB's Top Men
  • Milin, a senior from Croatia, reset Chad McKenzie's 12-year-old 100 breast record with a prelims time of 52.92.
  • Bakersfield enjoyed having three men in the 100 fly finals: Vili Sivec, Milin, and Yigit Saglam. Sivec finished second overall with a time of 47.11, another CSUB Top 5 mark.
  • Sivec also led off the 800 free relay with a split of 1:36.54, good enough for fourth in CSUB's history, ranking him among the likes of `Runner legends like Mitchell Huxhold, Kris Rogic, and Ryan Brimer.
  • In the 200 free, Hansen felt Jacob Folsom and Arthur Schneider both posting times in the 1:38s is setting the pair of `Runners up well for the MPSF meet.
  • Adrian Paseta swam a personal best in the 400 IM (4:02.69).
