BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In the middle of his seventh year as Head Coach of the CSU Bakersfield baseball team, Jeremy Beard is preparing his team to tackle the 2023 season. On Friday, Beard released the Roadrunners' schedule for the season ahead, which is set to kick off at home on Feb. 17 and will feature Pac-12 programs like Stanford and USC, other Power 5 schools in Baylor and Ohio State, and a full Big West slate.
Â
"We push to put together the most competitive schedule we can for our student-athletes and the baseball community of Kern County," Beard said. "Our goal is to win the Big West Championship. We feel playing high caliber competition will prepare us best to reach that goal in an elite baseball conference. We will be challenged, but our players are preparing for it."
Non-Conference Schedule
Before the `Runners can make another run at a Big West title, Beard will navigate his squad through a challenging non-conference slate. `Runner fans will have their first opportunity to see the 2023 squad in action when CSUB opens the season at home with a four-game set against The Summit League's St. Thomas (Feb. 17-19). Bakersfield will also play host to non-league series against Manhattan (Feb. 24-26) and Ohio State (Mar. 10-12). Hardt Field will also welcome a few West Coast Conference schools for mid-week games: Pacific (Mar. 20), Pepperdine (Mar. 28), and Saint Mary's (Apr. 25).
Â
Beard's `Runners will hit the road for the first time on Feb. 21 for a mid-week clash with Saint Mary's before heading to Stanford for a three-game road set, Mar. 3-4. CSUB will also sprinkle in a mid-week game at USC on May 9 and the `Runners will spend their Big West Bye Week, May 18-20, in Waco, Texas for a three-game series against Baylor.
The Big West
CSUB will open Big West play on the road, Mar. 17-19, against defending league Champion UC Santa Barbara. The `Runners will host UC Davis (Mar. 31-Apr. 2), Cal Poly (Apr. 14-16), UC Irvine (Apr. 28-30), UC Riverside (May 12-14), and CSUN (May 26-28) at Hardt Field in 2023.
Â
Including UCSB, Bakersfield will play five Big West road series, also making stops at UC San Diego (Mar. 24-26), Hawai'i (Apr. 7-9), Cal State Fullerton (Apr. 21-23), and Long Beach State (May 5-7).
The Big West regular season Champion will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament this season. As was recently announced, a Big West Baseball Championship will be coming as soon as the 2025 season.
