Five `Runners Earn Academic All-District Honors

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The 2022 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's Soccer Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSU Bakersfield Athletics Department enjoyed five Roadrunners – one man and four women – earning Academic All-District honors on Tuesday.

Men

Representing Head Coach Richie Grant and the CSUB men's soccer team, Harry Downing became an Academic All-District honoree. A senior from Newquay, England, Downing has been an integral part of the `Runner defense for four years. He is completing a business degree and has maintained a 3.90 GPA in his time at CSUB.

Women

On the women's side, Head Coach Sebastian Vecchio enjoyed a quartet of `Runners earning the prestigious distinction: Kaylee Covert, Karen Flores, Nicola Lebakos, and Dome Rodriguez.

Covert is a forward in her fourth year with the CSUB women's soccer team. She posted a career-best performance with three points on Senior Night and has a 3.53 institutional GPA as a psychology major. Lebakos is another fourth-year student-athlete and was an important part of the CSUB midfield this season. She also boasts a 3.73 institutional GPA as a political science major.

Rodriguez and Flores are a pair of Ecuadorians, who, despite the language barrier, have maintained GPAs of 3.88 and 3.92, respectively. The `Runners are also integral parts of Bakersfield's lineup, both creating and facilitating for the CSUB offense.

Academic All-District and All-America

Nominated student-athletes must meet the minimum athletic requirements of being a starter or important reserve. Academically, candidates must maintain at least a 3.50 GPA and they must have been at their current institution for at least a year (an exception is made for graduate transfers).

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. for the soccer programs.
