Get to Know CSUB Women's Basketball: Combo Guards

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The clock continues counting down until the CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team opens the 2022-23 season. The Roadrunners just hosted the annual Blue-Gold Scrimmage last night, giving fans a chance to meet the team before the year officially gets underway. CSUB is now anxiously awaiting its first game, a home exhibition against Biola on Nov. 5.

Before then, we want to introduce the team to fans, providing more insight into the person behind the name, number, and uniform. Next up in our position-by-position breakdown of the `Runner women's basketball team, meet Head Coach Greg McCall's combo guards.

  • McCall on the group: "These players have great versatility, being able to play 1 through 3. They will cause a lot of mismatch problems by us moving them around, which makes subbing a lot easier. All of them are great shooters and I'm excited to see what they do this season."

  • #0 Simone Johnson (Returner)
    • 5-foot-8, sophomore
    • From Sacramento, Calif., went to West Campus High School
    • Played in 23 games last season, starting 13 times
    • A three-time all-league honoree during prep career
    • Led the WCHS to two Section Championships and a State Championship in 2017.
    • Coach McCall: "Simone is a good defender who is very strong. She has a very high motor and she is a high-energy player."
    • Go-to gas station snack: "A purple Powerade, throw in some Funyons, Starbursts, and some beef jerky."
  • #1 Tatyanna Clayburne (Returner)
    • 5-foot-8, sophomore
    • From Gilbert, Ariz., went to William Field High School
    • Played in 23 games last season, starting nine times
    • Led all CSUB freshmen in minutes (20.7 per game)
    • Scored a season-high 20 points against Fresno State
    • Coach McCall: "Taty came in as a point guard but showed she showed her scoring ability. She has a great mid-range game, but she also has the ability to get to the basket and she has great court vision."
    • Favorite pre-game song: "Nevada by YoungBoy."
  • #4 Grace Hunter (Newcomer)
    • 5-foot-10, junior
    • From Porirua, Wellington, New Zealand
    • Transferred to CSUB after one season at Florida International University
    • Averaged 9.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists a contest last year
    • Spent the two previous years at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas
    • Coach McCall: "Grace is a very athletic guard. She can jump, she has speed, and at times, she can defend the 1 through 4."
    • Most influential athlete: "A'ja Wilson. She's a bucket. She's also mentally and physically tough."
  • #24 Sage Bridges-Bey (Returner)
    • 5-foot-10, sophomore
    • From Victorville, Calif., went to Oak Hills High School
    • Played 24 games last season, starting 10 times
    • Shot 45 percent from three-point range (9-for-20)
    • Scored over 1,000 points during her prep career
    • Coach McCall: "Sage is an athletic guard who can defend the best guards in our league. She's great with her hands and she can shoot the mid-range and the three-ball very well."
    • Family Feud Teammates: "Sophia Tougas, Simone Johnson, Taylor Caldwell, and Morgan Edwards."
