Greg McCall became the third head women’s basketball coach at California State University, Bakersfield ahead of the 2011-12 season, and enters his 13th season at the helm of the program this fall of 2023. In his tenure at CSUB, McCall has guided the `Runners to three postseason appearances over a five-year span, including back-to-back WNIT appearances in 2014 and 2015. McCall led his squad to a dramatic upset as the No. 9 seed over No. 1 UC Irvine in the 2023 Big West Championship Quarterfinals to advance CSUB to its first
Big West Semifinals appearance just three years after joining in 2020.
McCall has had at least one athlete earn All-Conference honors since the school became Division I conference members in 2014.
McCall reached career and program milestones in 2021-22. He earned his 150th career win against CSUN in the First Round of the Big West Conference Tournament. The win also marked the program's first postseason victory in the Big West. McCall had three athletes (Austin, van Schaik, and Eggleston) earn All-Conference honors, including Best Sixth Player of the Year awarded to Vanessa Austin.
In his tenth year at the helm, McCall finished the 2020-21 season 9-9 overall and 7-6 in his first season coaching in the Big West. He won his second career win over a Pac-12 opponent taking down Cal on the road in the season opener. McCall went 6-1 on the road behind a five-game win streak. He had one athlete (Eggleston) named Second Team All-Big West.
In the Roadrunners last season in the Western Athletic Conference, Bakersfield went 8-8 in league closing the regular season with a win over Grand Canyon before the 2020 WAC Tournament was canceled. Overall, McCall finished the 2019-20 season 16-13, including a 12-4 home record. McCall had one player (Eggleston) earn postseason honors landing on the All-Newcomer Team.
McCall and his team produced a winning overall (14-17) and league record (9-7) for the third-straight year in 2018-19.
In 2017-18, McCall's Roadrunners posted a 10-4 record in conference play for the second-straight season and was one win away from claiming the Western Athletic Conference regular-season title. He won his 100th career win at Kansas City on Feb. 3, 2018 with a 76-62 victory. The team entered the 2018 WAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed for the third-time in program history. CSUB reached the tournament finals for the first time but dropped a closely-contested game to Seattle U. McCall’s team hosted the first round of the WBI, its third postseason appearance in five years. The 18-14 overall record is the team's best finish since 2014-15.
After a slow start, the Roadrunners tied for second in the Western Athletic Conference with a 10-4 record. Bakersfield improved their overall record by five games to 15-14 in 2016-17.
Playing a tough schedule that featured five teams that finished the 2015-16 season in the top 25, the Roadrunners went 12-19 and returned to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament for the third consecutive season.
McCall led the Roadrunners back to the WNIT in 2014-15 as CSUB won a Division I school record 23 games (23-9). The Roadrunners finished second in the Western Athletic Conference for the second consecutive season. McCall won his 50th career game at California State University, Bakersfield on Jan. 10, 2015 when the ‘Runners defeated Grand Canyon 90-67.
In year three, McCall led the Roadrunners to a 19-12 mark, a second place finish in the Western Athletic Conference, and an appearance in the 2014 WNIT.
Bakersfield improved to 12-17 in 2012-13, winning a school Division I record nine consecutive games at one point.
Limited at times to just six players during his first campaign, the Roadrunners continued to compete, winning two of their final four games to finish the 2011-12 campaign with a 7-22 record.
Prior to becoming Bakersfield's head coach, McCall spent the previous four seasons (2007-10) as an assistant at CSUB helping guide the Roadrunners to a pair of postseason appearances including a 22-12 record in 2011. He was instrumental in recruiting student-athletes for the ‘Runners, along with scouting, game planning and player development.
McCall’s first stint as a head coach was at nearby Taft College for 10 seasons (1997-2007), helping restart the Cougars’ women’s basketball program and successfully leading them into the California Community College Athletic Association Tournament. He won 98 games at Taft.
McCall began his coaching career at CSUB under Pat Douglass, winning a NCAA Division II National Championship in 1997. He also played for Douglass in 1991 and was a team captain on the Roadrunners’ Division II Final Four team. McCall averaged 9.9 points per game and was a key piece to the men's program's success while on the team.
Greg McCall and his wife Tanae have a daughter, Chloe. McCall also has five other children.
His oldest daughter, Dewanna, was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury in the first round of the 2009 WNBA draft with the fifth overall pick after a standout career at Auburn (2006-09).
McCall's second oldest daughter, Erica, led Stanford to the 2017 Final Four before being taken in the second round (17th overall) of the WNBA draft by the Indiana Fever.
McCall's oldest son, Justin, is a Bakersfield alum and former men's basketball athlete.
McCall is also step father to daughter Cheyenne and son Chaun.
