Coaches Poll Released; CSUB Wraps Pre-Season with LMU

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield will close out the exhibition season with a home contest against visiting LMU at the Main Soccer Field, Friday, with kick-off scheduled from 7:30 PM. The Roadrunners will be especially motivated after the 2021 Big West Pre-Season Poll was released this week and predicted CSUB to place 10th in league play this season.

"LMU are a well-coached team, with a lot of maturity and experience," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "This will be another solid warm up match for our program as we continue to develop our identity ahead of the regular season."

The Roadrunners are 1-1 this pre-season, racing past The Master's at home before falling on the road at defending Pac-12 Champion, Stanford.

CSUB scored nine times in its win over the Mustangs, including a pair of goals from Brima Kamara and Jamie Gutierrez. Five more `Runners struck for single tallies, as Bakersfield out shot The Master's 28-3.

The `Runners failed to get much traction in the offensive end at Stanford but went toe-to-toe with the high-powered Cardinal in the midfield and on the back end for most of the game. Stanford scored three of their four goals during one seven-minute stretch early in the second-half to skew the final margin of victory.

Scott Pengelly and Sucre Herrera have split time in the Bakersfield goal over the first two exhibition games.

CSUB has won two of its last three regular-season meetings with LMU, including a 2-1 victory on Sept. 18, 2015, in Los Angeles.

The Lions posted an undefeated 6-0-3 record during an abbreviated 2020 campaign, 5-0-2 in West Coast Conference play, and have not lost since falling to Seattle U., in the NCAA Championships in 2019.

The Roadrunners will begin regular season preparations following Friday night's contest, with their season-opening match set for Aug. 26 against San Jose State, in Bakersfield.
