Bakersfield Drops Exhibition Contest at Stanford

Palo Alto, Calif. – A gutsy defensive effort was undone by three goals against in a seven-minute second-half span, as CSU Bakersfield fell to the defending Pac-12 Champion Stanford Cardinal, Saturday afternoon, in Palo Alto. The home team would go on to win 4-0, dropping the Roadrunners to 1-1 in early season exhibition play.

"This was a great match and opponent to measure ourselves against," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Stanford's pressure and commitment is admirable. We are pleased with our effort, but realize that we have work to do in front of us. We'll continue to develop our identity this week ahead of our match against LMU."

The two teams were scoreless late into the first half, before Stanford's Carlo Agostinelli connected for the game's first goal off a rebound of a Scott Pengelly save in the 43rd minute.

Pengelly, making his debut in CSUB blue and gold, kept the `Runners in the game early with four first half saves. The true freshman from Belfast, Northern Ireland, finished the day with five stops in 66 minutes before giving way to classmate Sucre Herrera midway through the second half.

Leading 1-0 at the break, the Cardinal put the game out of reach early in the second, scoring goals in the 56th, 57th and 62nd minutes. Stanford out shot CSUB 20-3 for the game, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Bakersfield's best chance came midway through the first half when Niall Owens took a through ball on the left side of the box and missed high and wide to the nearside.

Carlos Armendariz attempted a pair of shots, while freshman Kevin Estrada had the team's lone shot on goal.

"Stanford will always be a tough opponent, but the tough games are the ones every team wants to be a part of," Armendariz said. "Everyone played hard, but unfortunately the result wasn't on our side today. There are a lot of positives we can build on and plenty we can learn from, and we'll do that as we move past this game and get ready to close out the pre-season next week."

The Roadrunners will wrap up the pre-season at home, on Friday, Aug. 20th, with a 7:30 kick off against Loyola Marymount. Tickets are available at GoRunners.com/Tickets.

Fans in attendance at soccer home games are required to wear face masks when social distancing is not possible. CSUB Athletics will continue to follow campus, city, state, and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19 policies and safety procedures, which are subject to change at any time.

Scoring Summary:
43 | Pengelly made a diving stop on Stanford's Aiden Weaver but couldn't corral the loose ball which squirted directly onto the foot of Agostinelli, who had snuck behind a pair of CSUB defenders, for an easy finish.
56 | Ousseni Bouda sent an arcing cross to the far, left post and found Layton Purchase who headed the ball past Pengelly and into the top corner to give Stanford a 2-0 lead.
57 | A Bakersfield turnover sent Weaver in alone against Pengelly. The Cardinal sophomore deked a pass to the center of the box before calmly slotting the ball into the right side of the net.
62 | Agostinelli struck for the second time when he converted a penalty kick and give Stanford a 4-0 margin of victory.
